Workability Middle School - Program Overview

The Workability I Middle School Program is a transition program for students in grades 6th through 8th who are referred by their special education teachers.  This program focuses on assisting students in understanding the connection between their education and their future career goals.  Students are exposed to the culture of the work place and the interpersonal skills that are necessary to succeed in working with others.  The standards set forth in the SCANS (Secretary's Commission on the Achievement of Necessary Skills) report are infused into the curriculum in a manner that assists students in developing a better understanding of all the elements necessary to have a successful career. Career Exploration classes provide students with vocational assessments, career research projects, and guest speakers. In cooperation with local businesses, the students have the opportunity to visit local job sites.

This program is not intended to be a stand-alone isolated program.  The content and activities support state standards, while building student awareness.  Special Education teachers are encouraged to integrate the Workability I curriculum into their standard curriculum.  Students are shown the value of education and how doing well in school will benefit their future success in a career.

The Sutter County Superintendent of Schools Office/ Sutter County One Stop staff look at the Workability I Middle School Program as a partnership between teachers and career educators designed to shift the odds in favor of our students enjoying successful careers.
