Work Permits
Anyone under the age of 18 that still attends high school is
required by the state of California to obtain a work permit.

How do I get a work permit?
Work permits are issued by the school district. Typically, you will make your request for a work permit after you have received the job offer from the employer.

  1. Obtain a work permit at your local high school. During the summer months or when school is not in session the work permit may be obtained from the superindent of schools office in the district the minor resides in.
  2. First you will obtain an application for the work permit. The top portion needs to be filled out by the minor, the middle portion needs to be completed by the employer, and a parent or guardian must sign the bottom of the application.
  3. Return the application to your high school. The permit will be processed and typed. (Please allow at least 48 hours for your school to process you work permit request.)
  4. Once you have received the work permit from your school, take it to your employer. You may begin working!
When does the work permit expire?
5 days after school starts each year. You must reapply for a new work permit at the beginning of each school year.

Also, if you switch jobs you must obtain a new work permit.

Can my work permit be revoked?
A work permit can be taken away or cancelled at any time by your high school administration. Usually permits are taken away if there is a problem with your attendance at school or a GPA below 2.0
