A resume contains highlights of your experience, qualifications, and skills. It is considered to be a formal introduction to a potential employer. Resumes should capture the employer’s attention.

APPEARANCES COUNT
Don’t try
to save money by printing your resume on cheap
copy paper instead of good quality paper.
Check for typos, grammatical errors,
and smudges. (Use the spell check on you computer!)
Ask a friend
to review the resume to find mistakes you may
have overlooked. Have them check for spelling and
grammatical errors (spell check doesn’t catch everything).
DOES SIZE MATTER?
Employers
typically spend a short time reviewing your resume.
Don’t overwhelm
them with to much information. Keep it short
and to the point. In most cases, it shouldn't be larger than one page.
STATE YOUR CASE
If you
are seeking a job in a field you have no prior
experience, don’t focus the resume on
your employment history. Instead, focus on
the skills that you have.
PUT YOU BEST FOOT FORWARD
To show that you are more qualified
than the competition, list more than the responsibilities you have had at
your previous occupations. Include specific accomplishments and achievements.
NO EXTRA PAPERS
When you
send out your resume, don’t
include copies of transcripts, letters of
recommendation, or awards unless you are instructed
to do so.
Bring these extra materials along
with you to show the employer if you are called in for an interview.
DON’T GET PERSONAL
Personal information does not belong
in your resume.
Do not include information on your
marital status, age, or race.
