YOU ARE JUDGED BY WHAT YOU WEAR
FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE CRITICAL
Should you be judged by what you wear? Of course not, but the reality is that you are. Appropriate clothing is very important, even when applying for a job. Don’t wear your everyday clothes when you are out picking up applications at a business. Wear what you would wear for an interview. After all, you never know the person handing you the application may be the boss.
The first thing an employer sees when greeting you is your attire, so your clothing says a lot about who you are. Make a point of being well-groomed, neat and clean. Make every effort to have proper clothing for the type of job you are seeking. Attitude is as equally important as your clothing. Remember to smile, make eye contact, and speak clearly.
Helpful Hints:
The night before the interview:
• Decide what you will wear.
• Try your outfit on to make sure you feel comfortable in it. If it’s too low, too tight or too loose don’t wear it!
• Make sure your outfit is clean and wrinkle free.
• Don’t forget to look at your shoes! They are a very important part of your outfit and should be clean as well.
• If you are wearing a dress or a skirt, make sure you have two pairs of pantyhose. Keep the extra pair as a spare in case you get a run in the ones you are wearing.
• Check your fingernails. Clean, clip, file, polish, etc... if necessary.
• Plan on how you will wear your hair and make-up.
The day of the interview:
• Shower, shave, brush teeth, put on deodorant, etc…
• Hair should be clean, dry, and out of your face.
• Keep your make-up simple and natural.
• Very little cologne or perfume should be applied, if any.
• Be conservative; keep your jewelry simple. Do not wear anything that takes the focus off of you.
• No earrings should be worn in your eyebrows, nose, tongue, chin, etc…
• If you have tattoos be sure to cover them up.
• Once you have arrived at the business check your attire one more time before your interview.
