Anyone Interested in taking ANY Medical Class Must Follow
the Process Described Below. |
- Come to the Sutter County One Stop or call by phone (822-5120) to be scheduled to attend a mandatory Health Careers Information Meeting. Information Meetings are the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 3:00 PM at the One Stop campus.
- During the Information Meeting, the instructors will discuss the requirements of the course and answer any questions. In addition, students will sign-up to take the ABLE assessment. Anyone interested in taking medical classes through ROP Health Careers will be required to take and pass the Health Careers ABLE assessment (a standardized test used to measure math and reading skills) for the course they are interested in taking. A WIA (Workforce Investment Act) representative will also be on-hand to discuss eligibility requirements for those interested in financial assistance with books, uniforms, and other materials.
- Assessments are offered four times a month (once a week) and the dates vary (please refer to the ROP Health Careers Schedule for a listing of dates/times). Two afternoon assessments will be offered from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM. Two evening assessments will be offered from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Sign-ups will be limited to 50 students for each assessment date.
- One week after you take the assessment, you will receive a postcard in the mail with the scores of your assessment. To enter program, upon completion of the course, all scores should be at the level needed for the course in all 4 areas of testing. Prospective VN students have to have PHS in all 4 areas before starting the class.
- If you do not pass the assessment at the required grade level for the class you are interested in taking, you will need to sign-up for remedial classes to brush-up on the subject area you are weak in. The One Stop does offer remedial classes. Please come by or call to inquire about signing-up.
- If you do pass the assessment with at least the minimum score required for the class, you will be invited to attend a Health Careers Orientation to sign-up for class.
- Orientations are by invitation only. Orientations are designed for those students who have passed the assessment test at the minimum score level or higher.
- The orientations last approximately one hour and will cover the basic requirements of each class. During this time, students will officially be signed-up for class. The instructors will also cover class expectations, when certificates/licenses will be issued, distribute class booklists and etc. A Health Careers copier fee will also be paid for by each student during the orientation. All students interested in taking medical classes through ROP Health Careers must pay this mandatory fee. A WIA (Workforce Investment Act) representative will also be on-hand to discuss eligibility requirements for those interested in financial assistance with books, uniforms, and other materials.
Minimum Score Requirements for the Different Medical Classes
- Basic Patient Care (C N A) - ABLE 8th grade level (Can enter at 6th grade in all 4 areas and advance to 8th grade in remedial classes at the same time.)
- Medical Office Services (MA)- ABLE 11th grade level
- Vocational Nursing (LVN)- ABLE 13th grade level (Post-High School)
- Health Care Info. Services (Medical Billing, Ward Clerk, etc)- ABLE 10th grade level
- Anatomy/Physiology- ABLE 10th grade level
- Medical Terminology- ABLE 10th grade level
- Home Health Aide- NO TESTING. Must have an active C N A license
- RN Refresher- NO TESTING. Must have an active RN license
- IV Therapy- NO TESTING. Must be enrolled in at least a LVN Program
- Basic Arrhythmias (EKG Tech)- NO TESTING

Course
CNA Process
Course Requirements: A 6th grade level or higher on the ABLE assessment test is required to be accepted into the C N A class. A high school diploma is not required to participate in the class. However, all participants must be 16 years of age.
Course Schedule: The course consists of 180 total hours. 72 classroom theory hours and 108 clinical hours. Classroom theory will be conducted at the One-Stop campus located at 256 Wilbur Avenue. Clinical hours will be completed at various medical facilities in the area. The Fountains in Yuba City is the most frequently used site by ROP. Day and evening classes for C N A are available. The day class is 3 months in length, Monday through Friday. The classroom/theory hours are from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM or 10:30 AM to 3 PM. Clinical hours from 6:30 AM to 3 PM. Day classes start in August, November, and March. The evening C N A class is 5 months in length with variable days and weekends. Evening classes start in August and January.
Once the student completes the course, they can schedule to test for their state board examination at American Red Cross in Yuba City. The tests are usually conducted on Saturdays. You can receive notification of the results the same day.
Employment Outlook: C N A license holders can expect to make at least $10.00 - 11.00/hr in the local area. Out of area employment will result in higher wages. C N A’s are employed at hospitals and convalescent homes.
Cost of Course: The cost of the course is roughly $550.00. $175.00 for the books, $250.00 for the supplies/uniforms, $90.00 for the actual state board examination at Red Cross, $44.00 for the live scan fees, $12.00 to process the live scan through Department of Justice, and a $15.00 fee to process the application to Department of Health Services.
Home Health Aide Process
Course Requirements: Active C N A license holders can go on to become Home Health Aides. Interested individuals are encouraged to sign up for a Health Careers Information Mtg. The total course is 50 hours long. No state board examination is required. Cost of Course: The cost of materials is approximately $66.00 for books and $15.00 fee to process the application to Department of Health Services for an upgrade to Home Health Aide.
Employment Outlook: Home Health Aides can expect to make $10.00 to $11.00/hr starting in the local area. Home Health Aides usually work outside of a facility and have 6-7 clients they visit on a daily basis.
Medical Assistant Process. The class is also known
as Medical Office Services
Course Requirements: An 11th grade level or higher on the ABLE Assessment Test is required to be accepted into the MA course. A high school diploma is not required to participate in the class, although some employers may require a high school diploma/GED to work at their office. All Medical Assistants must be CPR/First Aid Certified.
Course Schedule: The course consists of over 500 hours of classroom theory and externship combined. Any of the 6 Modules (A-F) can be taken in random order. Each Module is approximately 6-8 weeks in length. Medical Terminology, which is separate from the other 6 Modules, is conducted only on Fridays. Once all of the Modules have been successfully completed, students may start their externship, which is 160 hours in length. 80 hours for front office and 80 hours for back office. Classroom theory will be conducted at the One Stop campus located at 256 Wilbur Avenue. Externship hours will be completed at various clinics and doctor offices in the area. The course length is 6 to 9 months, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM or 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Students may elect to attend both sessions and complete the course in 6 months.
Employment Outlook: Medical Assistants can expect to make at least $9.00/hr, to start in the local area. Out of area employment will result in higher wages. MA’s are employed in clinics and private doctor offices. After completion of the course a state exam may be taken for certification. However, certification is not required for employment.
Cost of Course: The cost of the course is roughly $600.00. $350.00 for the books and $250.00 for the supplies/uniforms.
LVN Process
Course Requirements:All those interested in the 18-month evening LVN Program must submit a completed LVN application to Pam Mahmoudi, Applications can be downloaded from this website and/or hard copies are available at the front counter at 256 Wilbur Avenue. Prior to acceptance in the program, all candidates must complete the following pre-requisites. 1. Complete a C N A course and hold an active C N A license, 2. Complete an Anatomy & Physiology course, 3. and complete a Medical Terminology course. 4. Applicants must have post high school reading and math scores. 5. Pass a drug test (if accepted into program). 6. Have good standing on their physical. 7. Have a negative TB Test. 8. High School Diploma or GED. 9. Current CPR and First Aid. 10. Complete the LVN application. 11. Current with MMR Vaccine and Hepatitis B Vaccine. 12. Two letters of recommendations. 13. Provide a copy of picture ID.
Come to a LVN Information meeting from 4:30 - 5:00 pm given 2 to 3 times a month. Call (530)822-5120 ext. 3027 for meeting dates. Only 30 candidates are accepted in the program and 3 alternates, in case individuals drop the course.
Course Schedule: The LVN Program starts every two years. The next part-time 18-month evening class will start July 2010. The class is designed for those individuals who need to work during the day and want to attend school in the evenings. The class schedule is 2 to 3 evenings a week from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM for classroom theory. Clinical hours will be completed on the weekends 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM at Fremont and Rideou t Hospitals. Other clinical times and Health Care Facilities will also be used.
Employment Outlook: Licensed Vocational Nurses can expect to make as much as $19 to 28/hr in the local area. Out of area employment will result in higher wages. LVN’S are employed in hospitals, convalescent homes, nursing registries, and clinics.
Cost of Course: The cost of the course is roughly $2,500.00. This includes $1200.00 - $1300.00 for books, $300.00 for uniforms and medical supplies, $200.00 for the state board examination, $100.00 for the licensing fee, $80.00 for fingerprints, $75.00 application to Vocational Nursing Board, $16.00 for malpractice insurance, and $100.00 for copy fees.
RN Refresher Course Process
Course Requirements: The 12-week part-time RN Refresher Course is designed for licensed RN’s who have been out of the nursing field, and need to re-fresh their existing skills to re-enter the workforce.
Prerequisite: Active CA RN License or Active IP RN License.
Course Schedule: The course is 12 weeks in length. Classroom theory will be conducted at the One Stop campus located at 256 Wilbur Avenue. Clinical hours will be performed at local medical facilities, such as Fremont/Rideout. The course schedule is Monday through Thursday from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, and then Tuesdays 8:00am to 5:00 pm once clinical start. Clinical hours will be from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM, 2 to 3 days a week.
After successful completion of the course, all students will receive a certificate of completion. The course is 280 hours long. All students will earn 159 hours of continuing education units to keep up their RN license.
Employment Outlook: Registered Nurses can expect to make roughly $28.00-$32.00/hr in the local area. Out of area employment will result in higher wages. RN’s are employed in hospitals, convalescent homes, clinics, and educational settings.
Cost of Course: If the class is not covered by a grant, it will be a fee-for-service course and will cost roughly $1,400.00, which also includes the cost of the teacher’s salary and tuition. Other expenses include: approximately $400.00 for books, uniforms and supplies and $16.00 for malpractice insurance.
