How to Start Your Career in the Business Field

Attention!
Interested in starting or enhancing your career in business? 
Follow the simple steps noted below:


STEP 1
Come to or call the Sutter County One Stop or call 530.822.5120 and one of our friendly staff will sign you up for the next mandatory ROP Business Course Information Meeting.

STEP 2

Attend the ROP Business Course Information Meeting. At the Information Meeting, you will be provided with information about the various business courses offered at Sutter County One Stop. 
You will learn:

    • What courses are offered
    • The prerequisites
    •  About the course requirements, attendance policy, dress code, etc.
    • What kind of Business Standard Based certifications are offered
    • Costs involved
      • Registration fee
      • Copy fee
      • Estimation of cost of books
      • Date and hours of the bookstore
      • Procedure for purchasing books and paying relevant fees
    • If our program is a match for your needs, you will be required to take an assessment test that will establish your basic skills literacy grade levels.

STEP 3
You will be tested in six areas:  Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, Spelling, Language, Number Operations and Problem Solving.

    • You must be at a minimum of 7th grade level for the Office Technology and Microsoft Office Computer Applications courses.  Eight-grade level is required to enroll in the Accounting course.
    • When you have met the prerequisites you will be invited to attend the Registration Meeting in which an instructor will assist you in determining which course best meets your needs.
    • You will be provided with the time and date to attend the Registration Meeting.  At the registration meeting you will be given a book list that will list fees that need to be paid (registration and copy fee) and also the books/materials you will need to get started in the class.

STEP 3
Attend the ROP Business Course Registration Meeting. At the Registration meeting you will accomplish the following:

    • Complete registration forms
    • Obtain in depth information regarding course requirements
    • Learn about the internship program
    • Meet with the instructor to determine your training plan, set your start date, and determine which books you will need
    • Answers to any questions you might have about the program
    •  A WIA (Workforce Investment Act) representative will also be available to discuss eligibility requirements for those interested in financial assistance with books, and other materials
    • Receive your booklist which provides relevant fees that need to be paid before your first day of class, the booklist will also list the books/materials you will need to get started in the course

STEP 4
Start the ROP Business Course of your choice!  Congratulations, you are off to learning new and exciting things. 

YOU MUST PRESENT YOUR RECEIPT ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS SHOWING THAT YOU HAVE PAID THE COPY FEE AND REGISTRATION FEE BEFORE YOU CAN ATTEND THE CLASSES.

Accounting Principles & Practices

  • Manual accounting (accounts payable & receivable, payroll, 10-key, financial statements, and more) and computerized accounting, Excel and QuickBooks

Computer Class FAQ


How can I register for the Computer Classes?
Come to the Sutter County One Stop or call (530) 822-5120 and sign-up for the ROP Business Courses Information Meeting.  The information meeting will provide all the information you need to decide which course is right for you.  Complete the assessment testing, next attend the Registration Meeting to complete the necessary forms, make sure to pay relevant fees and have your materials ready for the first day of class.

Are there evening classes available?
No, not at this time through the ROP program.  However, an evening course is being offered through the Adult Education program.  You may call (530) 822-5120 for more information.

Do I have to know how to use a computer before I start class?
No.  Courses are available for beginner, intermediate and advanced computer users.

How often do the classes start?
Bi-weekly. Call the Sutter One-Stop, (530) 822-5120, to sign up for the ROP Business Courses Information Meeting.

What is the fee for taking the computer classes?
There is a mandatory copy fee of $15.00 for each course you enroll in and a $50 registration fee for each course you enroll in.  Books and supplies must be purchased by the student. There is a fee for the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification exams and the IC3 Certification exams should you chose to pursue certification.

Will I receive college credit for these courses?
Introduction to Word, Advanced Word, Introduction to Excel, Advanced Excel, Beginning Business Computers, and PowerPoint are articulated with Yuba College.

Do I need know how to type to take computer classes?
It is best if you know the keyboard by touch.

Are classes open entry/open exit, or are there specific start dates?
Classes are open entry/open exit with specific registration dates.
The student then works at their own pace but needs to finish the course in a timely manner (with the course hours.)

Is there a waiting list or can I enroll in classes right away?
Start dates are ongoing. Call (530) 822-5120 for specific dates.

Do I need a referral to take classes or are they open to the public?
You do not need a referral. Classes are open to the public.

Do I need to purchase textbooks and supplies right away? Will the instructor let us know where to purchase the textbooks and supplies?
Books should be purchased before the class start date. The instructor will advise where to purchase books and supplies.

What financial resources are available?
WIA (Workforce Investment Act) counselors are available for eligibility evaluation. Students may apply for assistance in purchasing Microsoft Certification exams through the Student Body Microsoft Certification fund.

Will I have home work?
Yes.

Do I have to have a computer at home to take these classes?
No, however, it would be to your advantage to have a computer with the appropriate software. We do have a vendor that offers the software at a discounted price.

Do I receive a certificate upon completion of the course?
ROP Certification is awarded to students completing with a 90% average or greater. Microsoft Office Specialist Certification is awarded to those who take and pass the Microsoft exam. IC3 Certification is awarded to students who take and pass the IC3 exams.
